The Recreation Centre is located north of Yeovil town centre between Mudford Road and Ilchester Road, just north of Yeovil College campus.

History of Yeovil Recreation Centre

There has been an area of public open space on this site since 1929, and over the following 40 years the site has grown to what is shown on the map today. The types of activities have changed over the years; the site is well used by the people of South Somerset.

The Recreation Centre has been known by a variety of different names including “Yeovil Rec”, “Mudford Road Rec”, “Mudford Rec”, and “Muddy Rec”.

Recent Developments

Over the last 20 years Yeovil Recreation Centre has undergone some major site improvements:

2002 – The Bill Whistlecroft Athletics Arena, Yeovil was totally refurbished, replacing the dangerous synthetic surface, levelling the infield area, and erecting a new hammer cage.

2003/4 – The Multi Use Games Area, Mini Golf Courses, Play Area were created, replacing the old Adventure Play Area, Paddling Pool, Crazy Golf and Putting greens.

The dilapidated changing rooms and café were knocked down and replaced with the new Jon O’Donnell Pavilion.

2005 – The football pitches at the top of the site were levelled, drained and reseeded to increase the number of football pitches on the site.

2009 – The play area was extended to create the Flagship Playspace. The Galley refreshments kiosk was also opened.

2010 – The Bill Whistlecroft Athletics Arena, Yeovil Grandstand seating was refurbished

2011 – The Bill Whistlecroft Athletics Arena, Yeovil track was retextured and new Hammer cage was put in.

2013 – A new full size Artificial Grass Pitch was developed and opened in August 2013.

2019 - A brand new pirate ship was installed in the Flagship play space.

2019 - The Bill Whistlecroft Athletics Arena, A new full size hammer cage was erected for competition and training use

2020 – The Bill Whistlecroft Athletics Arena, A new full size discus cage was erected for competition and training use

2021- a brand new Café, exactly like the Ninesprings Café was opened in July inside the JOD building, open all year round serving hot drinks and refreshments.

2021- At the same time our new indoor community space was also opened, suitable for indoor exercise classes, charity events, commercial meetings and children’s parties, whilst also being host to Yeovil and Sherborne Hockey club for post-match meals on Saturdays.
